A Briefing

Shakhroub is the highland of Mikhail Naimy’s village Baskinta, his birthplace (1889), and it is the land that belongs to the Naimy ancestry, until present day. It is situated at the foothills of Sannine mountain range that extends from Matn Caza to Kesserwan Caza, in Lebanon.

الشخروب هو قطعة الأرض التي تخصّ النُّعيْميّين في الجرد الأعلى لبسكنتا، مسقط رأس ميخائيل نعيمه (1889)، على سفح جبل صنّين الذي يحضن القضائين: المتن وكسروان في لبنان.

Shakhroub is the land that was guarded alive within Mikhail Naimy’s being of soul and mind. Despite the distances and the travels, the pulse of that land remained alive and vibrant within Mikhail Naimy. Although he was physically away from it, with measured distances, the land was still pulsating within him morally and spiritually. It is the land that incarnates the grand nostalgia and belonging الحنين الأكبر والأنتماء الأعظم.

هذه القطعة من الأرض هي التي أبْقتْ نعيمه بشوق دائم وفي حنين أكبر من أجل العودة إلى جذوره الممتدّة من الله إليه، والعكس صحيح، ومن تلك البقعة من الأرض إليه، التي منها صُقل سعْيه إلى النور وفيها بقيَتْ رفاته، ومنها انتقل إلى النور الأوسع.

Naimy left behind the man-made skyscrapers of New York, USA, for the God-made skyscrapers of the solemn quiet Shakhroub, Lebanon.

ترك ميخائيل نعيمه وراءه ناطحات السحاب النيويوركيّة التي هي من صنع الإنسان ليتنعّم بجمال شواهق الشخروب في لبنان التي تهذّب روح الإنسان وذوقه عبر أسرارها السكونيّة الجماليّة الكونيّة التي هي من صنع خالق يغيّر ولا يتغيّر.

That piece of land was a major inspiration for Naimy to write many of his works, most notably The Book of Mirdad.

 

من أهمّ ما أنتجه ميخائيل نعيمه من أعماله الفكريّة كتاب مرداد المُسْتَوْحى من طبيعة تلك المنطقة.

As Mikhail Naimy explains in his autobiography Sab’oun سبعون , meaning ‘seventy’, the word ‘Shakhroub’ has been popularized from the word ‘Shoukhroub’ which initially comes from the classic Arabic word ‘Shurkhoob’ meaning the vertebral column. The emanant rocks of Shakhroub are eroded in such a way that they are lined vertically, looking like spinal cords. See the photo below:

كما يفسّر ميخائيل نعيمه في سيرته الذاتيّة سبعون، كلمة ’الشَخْروب‘، والأصحّ ’الشُخْروب‘، تمّ تحريفها من الكلمة الأصل ’الشُرْخوب‘ التي تعني العمود الفقري وذلك لأشكال صخور المنطقة التي تشبه بخطوطها العموديّة العمود الفقري للإنسان
