Mausoleum

The mausoleum was designed and financed in 1999 by Prof. Nadeem Najeeb Naimy, the nephew of Mikhail Naimy and a reference in the Mikhail Naimy world of literature. There were discussions and brainstorms about the erected statue of Mikhail Naimy, prior to its execution, between Nadeem Naimy and Assaf Assaf, one of the three Assaf sculptor brothers who are (in chronological order) Assaf, Mansour and Aref.

The mausoleum was given its final touches in that same 1999 year.
The Assaf brothers stayed in Shakhroub, in the home of the ancestors that was renovated by Mikhail Naimy in the 1940’s, from the beginning of May 1999 until the 7th of September 1999. They sculpted Naimy’s head and shoulders on one of the eminent rocks of Shakhroub, which was one of the places that Naimy targeted to meditate and purify his thoughts. The photo of the sculpture was taken from Nadeem Najeeb Naimy’s documentary book-cover that is about Mikhail Naimy and that was published in 1978.

The minister of communications back then Mr. Michel Samaha attended the inauguration of the mausoleum on 9/9/1999, with a host of officials, journalists, and friends.

سنة 1999، موّل الدكتور نديم نعيمه وصمّم ، بالتنسيق مع عسَاف عسَاف، أحد الإخوة النحّاتين الثلاثة، مقام ميخائيل نعيمه في الشخروب كما نعرفه اليوم. واجتمع الإخوة الثلاثة عسّاف ومنصور وعارف في منزل الأجداد في الشخروب ومكثوا من أوّل شهر أيّار 1999 حتى السابع من شهر أيلول 1999 في الشخروب، وعملوا على منحوتة ميخائيل نعيمه، التي ظهرَت من قلب شاهق صخري طبيعي.

وفي التاسع من شهر أيلول (9\9\1999)، افتُتح المقام بحضور وزير الإعلام آنذاك ميشال سماحة وثلّة من الرسميين والإعلاميين والأصدقاء.

The face of Mikhail Naimy statue that is engraved on one of the rocks of Shakhroub, in the fold of which Mikhail Naimy used to meditate and transcend, is taken from Prof. Nadeem Naimy’s (1978) documentary book about Mikhail Naimy The Path of the Self that Leads to Itself طريق الذات إلى الذات .

حُفر وجه ميخائيل نعيمه على أحد شواهق الشخروب الذي كان نعيمه يتظلّله ويتنسّك بصمته وبامتداده لله، وقد اتُخذَتْ صورة غلاف الكتاب الوثائقي للدكتور نديم نعيمه (1978) طريق الذات الى الذات مصدراً ومرجعاً رئيسيّاً للمنحوتة الصخريّة.

 

 

 

On the door, in the photo, behind which lie the remains of Mikhail Naimy, the following words are inscribed, taken from Mikhail Naimy’s book Najwa’l Ghouroub نجوى الغروب , meaning Soliloquy of the Sunset (1973).

 

على الباب الذي يحمي رفات ميخائيل نعيمه خلفه، حُفرَتْ هذه العبارة، الواردة في كتابه همس الجفون (1973):

"طفلك أنا يا ربّي!

وهذه الأرض البديعة، الكريمة، الحنون

التي وضعتني في حضنها

ليست سوى المهد

أدرج منه إليك".

The Assaf brothers stayed in Shakhroub, in the home of the ancestors that was renovated by Mikhail Naimy in the 1940’s, from the 1^st of May, 1999, until the 7^th of September 1999.  The inauguration of the statue took place on September 9, 1999, in the presence of the minister of media and a host of friends and media.
